Snow Removal Plans

snow removal Despite an early snow in October – par for the course here in Cache Valley – there hasn’t been too much snow yet. It will come soon, though. If it’s anything like last year, we can expect to get hit pretty hard in the middle of December. That means now is the best time to start planning for snow removal.

Snow removal is an important part of running a business here in Cache Valley. If you don’t do it, it’s difficult for customers to access your business. It could leave hidden ice patches that present hazards to them and leave you liable for lawsuits over negligence. Ignore it too long and the city will even fine you for it. Don’t wait until it’s already fallen before you get prepared. Best to get ahead now so you can take care of it whenever the snow falls.

1. Get Extra De-Icer

De-Icer is the most important thing you’ll need to keep your business safe for your customers. Before the snow falls, you’ll want to check your inventory and make sure you have enough. It’ll be a real problem if winter comes and you need to de-ice your parking lot, only to run out halfway through the job. Better to get some extra just in case so you don’t have to worry.

2. Make a Plan

It doesn’t have to be a complicated plan, but you should know what to do as soon as the snow hits. You want to have planned out where the snow should be shoveled off to, where the city snow plows will push the most snow to when they pass by your business, and what are the areas most likely to ice up when it gets cold. It’s important that you let your employees know about this plan in advance. It’s not easy doing it all yourself, so your employees need to know what to do when the snow comes to prevent confusion.

Part of planing includes knowing how the snow plows in your area operate. In some places, they come if there’s an inch of snow, but in others they only come if its more than two inches. Whether or not the snow plow comes will determine just how much snow might be on your sidewalk. If you know it’s going to be an issue, you can call up extra help before you get to your business and get it done early.

3. Set Up Curb Reflectors

Curb reflectors are reflective posts that you can use to mark the walkways around your business. They can help show where people should walk when they approach your business. They also help guide snow removal by showing where people will be walking. These are especially helpful if your business is set up in a part of town that people don’t normally travel by every day.
